Carolina,

I think stopping eating meat helped because vegeterianism is just a healthier lifestyle. Think about how meat is prepared and what it's normally served with: white buns for hamburgers, sugar-laded sauces like barbecue and tomato ketchup, fried chicken breading etc. The meat not only adds hidden carbs, it adds fat. And as we all know, skinnier people have better blood sugar stability. Being vegetarian forces you to think about every bite you put in your mouth, which is vital if you have RH. And as an added bonus, you're helping the environment :)

Thanks for your comments...it's always nice to hear a compliment!

Steaphanie,
Thank you SO MUCH for your web site! Is wonderful to read the articles and posts of people that suffer the same condition, and to get very practical information and support.
I'm from Chile, I was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia about 12 years ago by an endocrinologist. I discovered I had this problem when for the first time in my life at age 19 I tried to follow a strict diet (the "military diet"). I have never been overweight but just wanted to try the diet probably because it was the trend. I was the worst experience ever I felt shaky and sweaty and like I was going to faint, of course it was the last day of diet. At the beginning my family thought it was low pressure and they would lay me down with my legs up and give me a sweet, which of course worked. When It became more frequent I visited the doctor who made a glucose tolerance curve and insulin test and diagnosed it. Since then I married and haver three kids, during my pregnancies I had gestational diabetes and after the last baby I had a weight problem for the first time. I kept like 10 kilos, and have had trouble loosing them. So I went to the doctor again to find after the exams that my condition has worsened.... The doc, put me in a strict diet, low carb and lots of vegetables and fruit (she said to always eat the raw fruit or vegetable first). However I still have crashes. I'll buy your book to try to find some diet solutions.
I wanted to ask you why do you think that stopping to eat meat helped?, I love meat and it would be very hard to stop eating it.
Thanks again for your web site and your eloquent writing!
Greetings from Chile!

Alcohol puts bad, unwanted stress on the pancreas, pushing you farther into insulin resistance.

Besides... it's sugar and carbs anyway (depending on what you're drinking).

[...] I’m going to blame the slight change in diet coupled with the time change, which threw my body clock–and my eating times–completely off (or perhaps it was the stress of economy air travel!).
There's some research out there that suggest some artificial sweeteners can heighten the insulin response. I'm of the mindset that most artificial sweeteners are found in "junk" food anyway!
Everything I've read suggests alcohol is a no-no. I can't drink it without a bad sugar response. I can drink a very small glass of wine per day with food, and that's it.
Best,
Stephanie

Yep, I'm very glad I found it also. Just two more questions.
You say we shouldn't use artifitial sweeteners, why would that be?
And the second one, what's your oppinion about alcohol intake? is it allowed on a RH diet?
love

I think as long as you don't eat a very ripe one, it's fine...a banana that's slightly green has less sugar. Glad you found the page..."panic attacks" ran in our family...until we found out about RH.

Hi Steph
Your page is a blast, I've been struggling with panic attacks for years and just recently realized I might have RH. Changing my diet has been a great help, feeling much less anxious all the time. Have to take a 11hrs flight in a few more weeks, and actually I feel OK about it for the first time in a long time.
Just wondering, isn't that banana you had at 2pm a bit bad for our condition?
Loving all the info!

I think the answer depends on how many calories you need a day; I'm not a calorie counter...I control my portions instead and keep a close eye on the scale. What I posted works for me; I am 6' tall, 184 lbs (which is normal weight for my height...I've lost 5 pounds since I started this blog!). I exercise almost every day for about 20-30 minutes: biking, swimming, Tae Kwon Do. If you exercise more than me (or are taller!), then by all means eat more. My advice would be to keep a close eye on your weight. You'd be surprised about how many calories are in a full sandwich!

Hello,
Thanks for the menu.

Being an re-active hypoglycemic, I want to ask someting about the menu.

I am not overweight, am nearly slim, in this case also should we eat also not much?

For instance instead of eating 1/2 of sandwich, why we do not eat 1/1 of the sandwich, and idem for others.

Thanks,

P.S. I appreciate very much this site.
