Aspirin Lowers Blood Sugar?

Aspirin has been used for over a hundred years to treat diabetes. Recently, salsalate, a chemical cousin of aspirin, has shown promise in the treatment of diabetes as well. Is it possible the drug could also treat reactive hypoglycemia? That depends on what is causing your blood sugar levels to drop.

Researchers at Harvard University and the University of California, San Diego, conducted a study in 2001 into the effectiveness of aspirin and found that high doses of aspirin blocked the action of an enzyme called ikB kinase Beta (ikkBeta). Blocking the enzyme resulted in the mice being more sensitive to insulin; therefore they had lower blood sugar levels.

Complicating the beneficial effects of aspirin is the fact that at high doses, aspirin can cause intestinal bleeding, dizziness, and nausea.

While aspirin, and its cousin salsalate, may be beneficial for pre-diabetes related reactive hypoglycemia, it doesn’t look like it would be beneficial from the type of reactive hypoglycemia that I have; my problem is that I appear to be too sensitive to insulin. The last thing I need is something that would make me even more sensitive.
